Retention

Your final orthodontic result is dependent upon your retainers, so make sure you continue to follow through with the hard work that you've put in so far. Teeth are very dynamic; they move and shift throughout life whether or not you have had orthodontic treatment. Retainers are placed once your orthodontic appliances/braces have been removed. They are normally worn full time for several months until Dr. Parigini instructs you to wear them only at night.

It is also important to continue your good oral hygiene habits when your braces come off. Please schedule an appointment to see your general dentist to schedule a cleaning and show them your great smile!

Retainer Care

• Remember to remove your retainer before brushing and brush your retainer before placing it back in your mouth.
• When they are not being worn, keep your retainers in their container, away from heat or direct sunlight, as they can warp.
• Do not wrap your retainers in a paper towel or Kleenex as they have a tendency to get thrown away!
• Retainers that are made of plastic and wire and should not be soaked in straight mouthwash or denture cleanser as this will dissolve the solder joints. Clear retainers should be soaked in denture cleanser at least once a week for thorough cleaning. Plastic and wire retainers can be brushed with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
• Put the retainer in with your fingers. Don't bite the retainer into place, or flick it out with your tongue; this action can damage the retainer

If your retainers are lost or broken, please call the office immediately as new impressions may be needed and a new retainer may be required. We will provide the first set of retainers. If additional retainers are needed, due to patient non-compliance, loss or breakage, there will be an additional charge.

Always bring your retainers with you to your appointments. If there is any damage or breakage, we will be able to determine whether or not a repair can be made.
